New Jersey Legislature to again extend the Permit Extension Act (PDF)
The New Jersey Assembly Housing and Local Government Committee recently released Bill A4422 (Senate Companion Bill S3165) to extend the expiration date of all state and local government land use approvals until December 31, 2014. The Bill also contains a new definition for “smart growth area" and clarifies the legislative intent of the original 2008 Permit Extension Act to include approvals in those designated areas as well. The Act is slated for a vote by both the full Senate and Assembly on the final day of the legislative session, Monday, January 9th. Please contact Kevin J. The Lien Law amendments clarify the statute and make it more consistent with court interpretations of the Law over the last 16 years. The amendments take effect immediately and include several significant changes that owners, contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers must understand and appreciate. The Appellate Division recently ruled on challenges made to the New Jersey Council on Affordable Housing (COAH) revised rules relating to affordable housing. COAH is the state agency charged with administering to municipal compliance with affordable (low and moderate income) housing obligations since 1985 (pursuant to the Fair Housing Act and the New Jersey Constitution as interpreted in the Mount Laurel decisions). COAH adopted revised rules relating to the affordable housing period from 1999-2018 (the Third Round) in 2004. Those rules were challenged and invalidated in substantial part by the court.

Kevin J. DiMedio attended the Chamber of Commerce of Southern New Jersey (CCSNJ) Nonprofit Workshop on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 held at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. A panel of experts discussed the top issues and challenges faced by nonprofits, including: legal and accounting issues; low-cost marketing strategies; emerging trends in online and mobile giving; financing options; grant writing; and updates on the public policy issues in Trenton. Mr. DiMedio serves as counsel and works with several nonprofits and charitable organizations based in the Southern New Jersey area. Wills For Heros - Rutgers Camden School of Law
John Reisner participated in the Wills For Heros event at the Rutgers Camden School of Law on Saturday, October 22, 2011. The Camden County Bar Association Probate Committee, of which Mr. Reisner is a member, in cooperation with the Wills for Heros Foundation, sponsored the event. Law students from Rutgers Camden School of Law assisted each of the participating attorneys, as they meet with dozens of first responders from the Camden, Burlington and Gloucester county area, and prepared individual estate plan documents for them. Most first responders left with a Last Will and Testament, a Power of Attorney, and a Living Will-Advance Directive.

UMDNJ CARES Institute “Calling All Angels Gala”
Kevin J. DiMedio again will host a table at the 4th Annual UMDNJ CARES Institute “Calling All Angels Gala.” Mr. DiMedio has been an Advisory Board member and sponsor of the UMDNJ CARES Institute for the last 4 years. The Gala draws approximately 500 attendees including major corporate and health care industry sponsorships. Founded in 1985, the CARES Institute is nationally recognized for its leadership in providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services to children who have suffered abuse, neglect, or domestic violence or other crimes. This year, more than 2,000 children will be treated at the CARES Institute with medical and mental health services that have been proven to help children overcome the effects of incidents of abuse and neglect or domestic violence. Mr. DiMedio and Earp Cohn PC are proud to support this great Institute in our community.

Urban Land Institute, Emerging Trends In Real Estate
Richard S. Israel and his guest, an officer of a national home builder, attended a conference at the Union League in Philadelphia to discuss the real estate market in the Philadelphia area over the next twelve to thirty six months. The theme of the conference was "The Era of Less," which reflects the collective opinion of real estate industry leaders that although the market has begun to rebound from the depths of the recession, the upward curve is expected to be shallow. The analysts used information gleaned from interviews with hundreds of real estate developers, builders, commercial and residential landlords and financiers. There was also an interesting presentation about the results of an online survey of members of "Generation Y."

Kevin J. DiMedio attended the 61st Annual Atlantic Builders Convention (ABC) at Atlantic City. The ABC is the Northeast's largest and most influential building industry trade show and conference. The three-day event featured 600 exhibits, a distinguished list of guests and presenters, educational programs, and a number of social and networking opportunities. The theme for the 2010 ABC was "Changing Tides," reflecting the changing economic conditions of the homebuilding industry.

Brian C. Darreff taught a class in Insurance Ethics for the South Jersey Claims Association. Attendees included representatives of the insurance claims, underwriting and marketing communities, along with attorneys from a number of law firms. The class included lectures and hypothetical situations that emphasized ethical decision making in the professional and personal venues. Attendees received continuing education credit hours for attending.
